Daryll Carlson is a wildlife photographer, ecologist, and PhD student from California that is currently living in New Hampshire. In her research, she uses sound to study baleen whales along the New England coast to understand how changes in the environment affect where they go and how they behave. Over the years, she's also studied other kinds of animals, like seals, sharks, and abalone, in many different places around the world. When she's not doing research, Daryll loves to explore the outdoors with her camera. Wildlife photography is her way of stepping outside of the lab and investigating the behavior and biology of new species in a new way. She hopes to capture photos that inspire others to pause, connect with the natural world, and appreciate the beauty around them. In her free time, she enjoys birdwatching, growing indoor plants, and hanging out with her dog, Zoe.

1. How do I say I'm a good photographer?

Being a good photographer means more than just taking a clear picture; it’s about capturing a moment that makes people feel something. Whether it’s joy, curiosity, amazement, or even sadness, the best photos tell a story and spark emotion. I try to take pictures that help people see the world a little differently. If someone sees one of my photos and feels a connection, or starts to look closer at the world around them, then I feel like I’ve done my job well.

2. What inspires you?

Nature inspires me! There is so much diversity, resilience, and beauty in the natural world. Nature is filled with stories to be told and lessons to be learned. I'm especially inspired by birds and their adaptability. They thrive in so many different environments, from cities to deserts to seashores, and are seemingly always in motion. Watching them never fails to ignite my curiosity and creativity.

3. What is your favorite type/style of photography?

Wildlife photography is definitely my favorite! I love spending time outside, observing animals in their natural habitats, and trying to capture moments that show off their personality and behavior. Nature is full of surprises, so wildlife photography is always an adventure! I especially love photographing wildlife that people don't usually think of as beautiful, like snakes, bugs, and fungi. There's so much beauty in the overlooked parts of nature, and I love finding creative ways to show others how fascinating, important, and unique they are.

4. What are common traps for new photographers?

A lot of new photographers believe they need a super fancy camera and expensive gear to take great photos, but I believe patience and creativity are so much more important. Photography is all about noticing little details, waiting for just the right moment, and using whatever equipment you have to tell a story. Some of the most powerful photos I’ve seen were taken with very simple equipment and a lot of creativity. So don’t worry about having the “best” gear! Focus on practicing, being curious, and experimenting with your own unique style.

5. What do you do when you feel stuck?

When I get stuck, I head outdoors! There's a bench by the river near my home where I love to sit with my camera. I go without a plan and just take time to watch and listen to what's around me. When you slow down and pay attention to the small details, nature has a way of surprising and inspiring you. You never know when you'll stumble upon a special moment, a new critter, or something else that sparks your creativity again.

6. What made you like photography?

I love that photography allows me to share the way I see the world with others. Everyone has a unique point of view, and photography is a way to capture mine for other people to experience too. For me, it's a perfect mix of science, art, and storytelling. I get to study the world around me, find creative ways to freeze moments in time, and tell stories through my photos. And the feeling when you finally get that perfect shot you've been working so hard for? There's nothing like it.

7. What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subjects in school were math and science, and my all-time favorite was a class called Environmental Science. We learned about different ecosystems, how organisms interact with each other and their surroundings, and how human activity affects the planet. It helped me understand just how connected everything in nature is. That class made me want to learn even more about the environment and helped inspire me to pursue a career studying nature.

8. What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about photography?

Practice, practice, practice! When I look back at photos I took years ago, I can see how far I’ve come just from practicing and learning every time I go out with my camera. Practice helps you get to know your camera, find your favorite spots, discover unique subjects, and learn which styles of photography you most enjoy. Every photo you take helps you get better, so keep going, keep experimenting, and most of all, have fun!
