Kayla Hicks - Author and Illustrator

Updated: Jan 20

Always having been a voracious reader, my goal was to create stories that readers love and connect with. Having written in Fantasy, Sci-Fi and now Romance genres (I love to read each and every one of these), I am hoping to give all these different kinds of readers a great story to sink their teeth into.

In my spare time, you can find me reading, playing video games, watching movies, or spending family time with my daughter and husband.

1. What are common traps for new authors?

The most common trap for new authors is that they lack confidence in their abilities to learn the publishing and marketing world. But if they had the confidence to do it all, they would learn techniques that would help them sell books and grow their audience. And part of this learning experience is having some mistakes, which is perfectly okay.

2. Do you prefer ebooks, printed books, or audiobooks most of the time?

I switch between ebooks and printed books when I read. Ebooks because I am a mom on the go, and printed because who doesn't love a printed book?

3. Does anyone in your family read your books?

I would love to say that my whole family does, but this isn't the case, and it isn't for lots of other authors. I would say that three, maybe four people in my family read my books, which means so much. And they have shown up at my book signings and more.

4. Do you only write for one genre?

I actually write in various genres from YA, children's picture books, contemporary romance, and superhero fiction. And I know that it's suggested to stick to one genre to build an audience, however, I try to write in genres that interest me. And thankfully, my audience has kept growing and stayed.

5. Do you let people read your work before it is finished?

Sometimes, but it depends on the project. I will typically ask someone to read it before it's finished if I am stuck or need advice.

6. What did you like to write and read as a kid?

As a kid, I didn't really have much access to books. But once I was able to gain access to the library, my reading really took off, with basically any books I could get my hands on. As for writing, I had this program for my computer where you could write the story and then they had clipart and images where you could place to create the pictures to accompany the story. I would spend hours working on that, just creating my own stories.

7. What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school was English class, however, I had several teachers tell me my writing was bad. But it only made me work harder. And then I found two teachers in my senior year of high school who loved my writing and even read the first book I wrote at 16 and encouraged me to keep writing.

8. How do you get over “writer’s block”?

The best ways for me to get over writer's block are reading, writing a short story, watching TV, or playing a video game.
