Russell J. Fellows is a storyteller. Whether through the written word or through voice acting, Russell loves bringing stories to life. The best part is when readers live those stories with him. Russell lives with his amazing wife and two wonderful children in Oklahoma - though he still isn’t sure how he ended up there. You can visit Russell on his website, russelljfellows.com. He is always open to listening to your stories, too.

1. What was your favorite subject in school?

English, far and away. I was never much for math or science. There were some who thought otherwise, but my heart always leaned toward English, especially Literature. I was one of the kids that loved Shakespeare. Others thought I was weird, and I won't lie - it hurt - but I still loved his stories. I loved all the classics.

2. What’s your favorite genre to write?

I fall easily into fantasy adventure. I don't have to worry about sticking to reality too closely and go wild. I especially love writing for younger audiences. The imagination and possibilities are endless. I love it.

3. What inspires you?

People inspire me. Kindness and hope. We're so often caught up in worrying about sounding too sappy or cliche, but love is really so very powerful and it can transform us. Real love can. Love that causes us to reach out a hand to help, to befriend the friendless, to offer kindness and humility wherever we go.

4. Who is your favorite author?

I have to say that there are so many incredible authors right now that it's hard to choose, but I would lean toward Jessica Townsend. I am absolutely in love with her Nevermoor series. Just amazing.

5. How do you come up with titles for your books?

The ideas usually come to me somewhere along the way - maybe one of my characters tells me, or I pick from a few that have jumbled around inside my head for a time. There isn't really one single way, though I do have them early on.

6. Would you and your main character get along?

Haha! I certainly hope so! My main characters in this current series are based on my own children (with some dramatic differences, of course), so I would hope they like me. But, like all families, I'm sure we'd have our arguments. But hugs are always available to make up.

7. What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

Just keep writing. No matter how bad things may look to you now, it can always be fixed. Just let your idea flow out of you and onto the paper first, in whatever way it pours, and you can always shape it into something better later. Don't stifle the story by trying to get everything perfect the first time.

8. What are the essential characteristics of a hero you can root for?

I'm going to come back to kindness. Kindness, to me, shows a level of strength that goes deeper to the core and soul of who we are as humans than anything else. Power doesn't mean a thing without love and kindness.

9. Do you prefer ebooks, printed books, or audiobooks most of the time?

I usually listen to audiobooks. I devour them, really, especially while I'm working (my other job, not writing). I love listening to the many talented narrators bring books to life. It gives the story another level of imagination and immersiveness that I can't get enough of.
