Suzanne Elson was born in Scotland and currently lives near London, Canada. Her poetry and short stories have been published in The New Canadian Short Stories Magazine, and OffBeatReads. Her debut picture book, Calm Down Counting, was published in Canada by DCCED in English and French. Suzanne’s debut middle grade novel, Haunted Pond, received an honourable mention in Kailei Pew’s KidsChoiceKidlitWritingContest. Because of her twenty-plus-year career as an ESL teacher, she’s easily transitioned to classroom visits with my books. Married for over thirty years, with three adult sons and two beautiful grandbabies, her passion for camping remains undiminished.

1. Out of all your projects, what was the hardest piece to create?

I have several SEL PBs that I found were very difficult to finish.

2. What inspires you the most? (For context: what is something that you look at that immediately puts your brain into creative mode?)

When I have nothing to do that day, and I have the house to myself, and I am well-rested/no pain, I write all day long!

3. Are there venues or resources that allow kids to publish work, like chapter books, art, poems, etc.?

There are, and most of them can be found through Twitter, or just by doing research online!

4. Why did you begin writing? Was it because of a person or something else?

I started writing in high school because I loved expressing myself that way.

5. What do you like to do to inspire yourself when you have a block?

I wouldn’t say I’ve ever had writer’s block, but I only write when in the mood; otherwise, it feels forced/like a chore.

6. What did you like to write and read as a kid?

I didn’t write as a child, but my mom was always buying us books, and because I grew up in Scotland, I read mostly Enid Blyton and Robert Louis Stevenson.

7. What was your favorite subject in school?

English, French and music.

8. What’s your favorite genre to write?

Right now, I am madly in love with chapter books! I am almost finished writing the first of a series of three.

9. Who is your favorite author?

Children’s authors would be Robert Munsch and Dr. Seuss. Adult author would be John Fowles.

10. What is your schedule like when you’re writing a book?

I try to work on it daily (there is no time set), but it’s not always writing. Sometimes it’s just editing, or ideas for the next chapter.

11. What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

Once finished, put it away for at least a month to revisit it with fresh eyes.

12. If you could spend a day with another popular author, who would you choose?

Shakespeare.
